Keep Your Dining Room Looking Beautiful

December 21st, 2009

Those who have a dining room in their home will agree that there is nothing better than having friends and family over to share a meal in this room. However, having a dining room with old furniture covered in dust is not exactly a comfortable place to eat in. A simple clean up should suffice, and a fresh perspective toward this important area can maximize its attractiveness and comfort. The Basics of a Dining Room   When it comes to a dining area, one should use it to its full potential and use it for its intended purpose. Dining room essentials will always include great dining room furniture such as a bold table that fits the room perfectly and, according to how many guests you plan on entertaining, enough chairs so everyone has a seat.   A cabinet or showcase to store all special china, glasses and cutlery can also be present in the dining room. Depending on the theme throughout your house, your dining room should encompass this design as well. If your home has been fashioned in a contemporary style, then the dining room should reflect that style choice. Depending on how your dining area is situated, it should either be an extension of your kitchen or living room.   It is important to make your dining room look beautiful, comfortable and inviting. This can be achieved in many ways and what will surprise most people is that it does not take an extravagant investment, only a creative mind. It also does not require an interior decorator to establish a warm eating area and if you are not overly creative (or simply do not feel like participating in the process), many ideas can be taken from décor magazines and books. The internet as well can yield many great ideas.   The Table as the Main Attraction The most important piece of any dining room furniture is the dining table. This is the main attraction of the entire space and when selecting a table, you have to consider the following. The current trend for dining room tables is bold dark wooden, rectangular solid ones. It is not really a new design but still looks very stylish. You will find that no matter what type of chairs you pair with these, the table makes a statement on its own. This sort of dining room furniture might not be in your price range, but see it as an investment as it is very durable and will withstand many nights of dining. Because it is such an inviting piece, it also does not require much table settings and a tablecloth is not even necessary. All you need is a runner, some simple crockery and utensils and this table will support any meal.   Although dark wood creates coziness, selecting a lightwood is also very chic. Once again, depending on the theme of your home, the type of dining room furniture that you do choose should match the rest of your furniture. The great aspect of lightwood is that it creates more space in a room. This is of course an optical illusion but this style seems to open up a space more.   The trend in many modern homes is steel framed table with a glass tabletop. The transparency of this sort of table is very versatile and can adjust to any space.   Chairs that Charm In most cases, when selecting a dining room table, you will probably get a set of dining chairs that belong to that specific table. However, more and more furniture stores are now allowing its customers to choose a table separate and introduce them to an array of chairs that one can choose from to suite the dining table. This gives one more options, which is great, meaning you end up with pieces you like, table and chairs, and not just having to be satisfied with the chairs because it came with your favorite table.   When choosing chairs, obviously, you are looking at comfort. Firm chairs that your guests will enjoy sitting on. If the chairs you like are hard and do not come with cushion seats, it is ok, you can always buy pillows to place on them.   Color is also important. Create a color scheme in your dining room and buy chairs that match your curtains as well as table adornments such as tablecloths, runners, place mats and even crockery and candles. Alternatively, choose a simple neutral color such as beige, black or brown that will go with anything. Don’t forget to remove the dining room furniture plastic that it is delivered in as soon as it reaches your home. Nothing is worse for your guests than sliding off chairs during dinner or hearing constant squeaking sounds each time they move!   A dining room is an important area in any home. It is a place for entertaining and for family gatherings. Basic style choices and routine cleaning can help ensure that the next time you entertain; you guests will leave content after a fun and relaxing night, eager to visit again soon.

How to Decide on the Best Dining Table

December 17th, 2009

Before you go hunting for a new dining room table you really need to decide what size of table you would like to fit the room in question. You could go for a small kitchen table or a larger dining room table maybe depending on your home layout and requirements. If space is tight and you would like the option to maximise use for a large number of people such as at Christmas then an extending table may be the best option. The smallest table start from around 80cm x 80cm and the largest dining tables can go to 3m+ Not everyone can accommodate a table nearly 3 metres long so a large extending table may offer the best of both worlds if you are only going to need the full 3 metres a handful of times a year You will hopefully have an idea by now of the size of table that you think you would ideally like to buy.

The next big decision should really be what type of wood to go for or to go for a mixture of wood and veneer. The type of wood you decide to go with will also be dictated by your budget. If your budget is quite small you may prefer to go for a cheap and cheerful pine dining table for example which can be picked up for as little as £100 including chairs if you shop around. The drawback of pine is that it is a soft wood so is easily marked which if you have a large family and children may not be the best option. An alternative budget table option would be to go for a veneer table with little or no real wood in its construction. These won’t look like real wood; however they are easy to clean down with a cloth and are also usually very hard wearing which makes them ideal for heavy use.

If you have a larger budget when buying a table it is highly recommended you try and go for an oak table. Prices can vary dramatically depending on the size and style of table. You could also go for other woods instead of oak such as Birch and Ash but if you want a table that will last a lifetime then oak is the only option in my mind.

Once you have found your ideal dining table you will hopefully get offered a range of matching dining chairs by the retailer. This decision is down to personal taste really. You could go for a grand full leather chair with a roll back or a more contemporary chair with subtle oak slats on the back and a simple leather pad. There are literally thousands of different designs to choose from for a wide range of budgets.
